Passion fruit (maracujà)
Passion fruit (Passiflora edulis Sims) is a tropical plant in the passiflora family. Passion fruit cultivation is booming, both for the production of fruit for natural consumption and for juice production. Brazil is the world’s leading producer of passion fruit.
Passion fruit is harvested between six and nine months after planting. It can be eaten both naturally and in the form of sweets and juices.
Passion fruit is of great nutritional value, thanks to its high concentration of vitamin C, B vitamins and mineral salts. Passion fruit’s soothing properties are also due to its alkaloids and bioflavonoids, which are beneficial to the central nervous system.
